I used to use Converse all the time

In an attempt to have at least one part of my house clean, I came across my old Converse from 2018. The first fancy shoes I bought with my own money. Suddenly, the memories started coming back.

I wasn't making much money in my first job. For the longest time, being able to afford a Converse was just impossible, especially if I won't be able to wear it regularly in a corporate setting. I already had shoes that I was wearing, mostly from college, since I just graduated, so it wasn't a problem for me. I don't really care much about shoes... or so I say, because as someone in their early 20s, U would have loved owning a proper pair of sneakers I can wear anywhere.

To give you context on how bad the financial situation was, the pair of my Converse shoes costs more than my 15-day salary. That means, I would have 15 days without anything to give my parents for food or bills. Crazy.

Then, my second job came along. I was then earning twice as much as I did in my last one. On my first salary, it was no questions asked, I immediately bought the light yellow Converse I've been drooling over at our local mall.

I wore it everywhere. I was obsessed with it. Even when they got dirty, I would still wear them. My mom gets annoyed, so she just chucks them in the laundry. The next thing I knew, I didn't have shoes available because I was waiting for my only pair to dry.

I used it till I wore it down a few years ago, 2021, maybe? There were holes in the side of the shoes that I haven't been able to fix. Back then, I already had a decent enough salary to afford to buy another pair of shoes that I could use daily.

Seeing my old Converse now made me look back on my old days walking in Makati, sleeping on the bus, drinking with my friends, window shopping at Glorietta, and so much more fun activities I had in my early 20s.

I have tripled my shoe count ever since, I now have 6 shoes that I find to be too many.

  1. From Merrel: A pair of black no-string shoes that I use daily for quick errands.
  2. From Skechers: A pair of white, high-cut sneakers when I know I'm going to a place where I need to look cute and preppy.
  3. From Gibi: A pair of black faux leather shoes for when I like to look edgy.
  4. From Figlia: A pair of baby pink topsider shoes that I used for my visa interview.
  5. From New Balance: A pair of white badminton sneakers for jumping rope.
  6. From Muji: A pair of grey walking shoes for when we'd go out walking.

They each serve a purpose, so I don't really need to decide which shoes to wear. But thinking about how I own 3 times what I owned 5 years ago puts a smile on my face. Damn, I can easily afford shoes now.
